When I first moved to Eastbourne from London I wanted to belong to something that would allow me to meet like-minded people as well as improve my speaking skills. I came along and sampled a couple of Toastmaster meetings and realised that this was definitely for me. It’s a lovely supportive group of people. Since joining in 2015 I’ve learnt so much as well as having had a lot of fun.

When giving speeches, whether it’s a full 7-minute speech or a short improvised table topic it’s crucial to get feedback. Other members always give feedback in a positive manner together with recommendations for improvement. I have found that the experience I have had at the club has improved so many skills for me including public speaking, creative thinking and the ability to think on my feet.

Although it’s called Eastbourne Speakers it also helps with listening skills, because as an evaluator you need to hone those skills to give accurate and useful analysis of the speech you are listening to.

I would highly recommend coming along to Toastmasters and trying it for yourself. I love it!
