The History of Eastbourne Speakers Club

Eastbourne Speakers Club was founded by noted public speaker Meg Heyworth. She also successfully founded Worthing Speakers Club in 2010.

Meg lived near Eastbourne and wished to have a club so that her clients, who wanted to be able to speak in public, had a safe and friendly environment in which to practice. The club opened its doors in October 2004. Early in 2005 fliers were placed around Eastbourne and people started to arrive.

In April 2005 she used a marketing method called attract the attractive and then the people who are really interested in Toastmasters started to arrive, in July the club had four signed up members.

That is a quarter of a club and worth building on, the club eventually charted in April 2007.

The organisation grew out of a single club, Smedley Chapter One Club, which would become the first Toastmasters club. It was founded by Ralph C. Smedley on October 22, 1924, so it is now over 90 years old. Toastmasters International has helped people of all backgrounds become more confident in front of an audience.

Toastmasters International is a non-profit educational organisation that operates clubs worldwide for the purpose of helping members improve their communication, public speaking and leadership skills. It teaches public speaking and leadership skills through its worldwide network of clubs.
